(May 15, 2008)--One federal investigator says the case of a Missouri woman involved in an online hoax that resulted in a 13-year-old girl's suicide shows that "the Internet is a world unto itself."

Los Angeles-based FBI agent Salvador Hernandez reacted after Lori Drew of suburban St. Louis was indicted for her alleged role in a creating a MySpace account to dupe the teenager.

Authorities say Megan Meier was led to believe she was chatting online with a 16-year-old boy who actually didn't exist.

The girl hanged herself at home in October 2006 after receiving a stream of cruel messages.

Hernandez said Drew is responsible for her actions, even if she couldn't foresee the results.

U.S Attorney Thomas O'Brien said, "This was a tragedy that did not have to happen."
