Teenager Accused Of Poisoning Teacher Save Email Print

(May 16, 2008)--A Louisiana high school student is accused of poisoning his teacher after the educator in Vidalia, La. was hospitalized with severe intestinal distress.

Authorities say the 16-year-old spiked her soft drink with eye drops.

She was treated and released.

Investigators think the boy put about three-quarters of a bottle of eye drops into the teacher's drink on May 5.

The school superintendent says the student had made poisoning threats before the incident.

The official said the teen was seeking revenge for another student who had been suspended by the teacher.

The student denied spiking the drink.

The main ingredient in eye drops can be highly toxic if ingested.

This student is probably in jail and expelled from school. Louisiana enforces zero tolerance laws too with the exception students are not required to attend an alternative school like they are in Texas.

If he did this now at his age what will he do by the time he becomes an adult? Scary thought.

Unfortunately, if this hoodlum is capable of poisoning a teacher's drink, he won't care about the effects. They'll find him in Huntsville one of these days, and I bet he won't be so tough or a hero then...he may be somebody's girlfriend! And truthfully, probably the school district's hands are tied where they can't do anything to him...if he has "behavior modifications," they really can do very little to him. This is all part of the reason I got out of teaching after ten years!!!! I'll say "paper or plastic" at Wal-Mart before I go back to teaching!

I think people should be educated about the effects of tetrahydrozoline, the ingredient found in some over the counter eyedrops. The misconception is that spiking a persons drink with this product will simply produce an annoying case of diarrhea. However, this is an urban legend, and the actual results may vary from severe nausea and vomiting to seizures or a coma. Ingesting tetrahydrozoline can cause many terrible symptoms up to, and including, DEATH!

The bad thing about this case is that no one is going to do anything to the kid. And to other students he's going to look like a hero. If it were me I'd give the student a life sentence for attempted murder.
