(August 01, 2008)—The US House of Representatives passed its Fiscal Year 2009 bill in a strong bipartisan vote 409 to 4.
The bill awards generous increases to Veterans Programs and Military Construction Projects; $47.7 billion for the Department of Veterans Affairs, $24.8 billion for Military Construction, Family Housing and BRAC.
"The bottom line is this bill is about maintaining a strong national defense, improving military readiness and respecting with word and deeds those who defend us and our freedom," said Congressman Chet Edwards, who introduced the bill.
The bill totals over $118 billion with $72.7 billion in discretionary spending.
Notably absent from the bill were energy legislation and other measures aimed at bringing the price of gasoline down.
Politico.com reported Friday that after the bill passed, House Democrats introduced a motion to adjourn, which House Republicans opposed. As House Democrats left the building and turned out the lights, House Republicans remained on the floor talking about gas prices
