$9 million Approved for Lake Repairs Save Email Print

A | A | A

(August 7, 2008) -- U.S. Representative John Carter announced Thursday morning that the Federal Government has approved $9 million dollars in funding for repairs at Lake Belton and Stillhouse Hollow Lake. Flanked by Central Texas city leaders, Rep. Carter made the announcement at Dana Peak Park on Stillhouse Hollow Lake.
Rep. Carter says $5 million will go towards repairs at Lake Belton, while the addition $4 million will head to Stillhouse.
The amount of funding equals the price tag in damages the various lake parks sustained during the floods of 2007. Most of the structures at the parks were destroyed not to mention the vast number of dead trees and vegetation that need to be replaced.
After the floods of 1992, without any federal funding, repairs at both lakes took 15 years complete. With the allocated funds today, park officials say all parks should be back up to pre-flood conditions within the a year.
Most lake parks are currently open. Dana Peak and Union grove at Stillhouse Hollow and Westcliff at Lake Belton remain closed until repairs can be made.

Well like the article says it is almost equal to the ammount in damage. This really needs to be done, I miss Dana peak so much. Thank goodness we are getting a chance to restore them. Hopefully we don't have this much flooding damage again. But some rain would be lovely.....

9 mil sure is a lot of money. I'm all for keeping nature in our lives - but this still feels like a horrible abount of $'s.

Why did it take sooooo long for Carter to aquire monies to repair these lakes when Lake Waco has been repaired long ago? Was he afraid it looked like pork barrel or is he really concerned about our area since he is out of George Town.
