(October 14, 2008)—Casey Anthony, the mother of missing Florida toddler Caylee Anthony, was indicted for first-degree murder Tuesday.
A grand jury handed up the indictment even though the girl is still missing.
Before the indictment was returned, Anthony’s attorney said the ordeal has been difficult.
“Casey is going through a nightmare, and has been living a nightmare for the last several months,” said attorney Jose Baez.
“She has a missing child, she's also someone's child, this family has had to withstand something unlike anyone has ever seen.”
The girl evidently disappeared in June, but she wasn’t reported missing until a month later.
The 22-year-old mother earlier was charged with child neglect, lying to investigators and some unrelated fraud and theft counts.
On Tuesday, her father, George, testified behind closed doors along with a detective and an FBI agent.
