WASHINGTON (March 20, 2009)—The U.S. Postal Service announced Friday it is closing six of its 80 district offices, cutting 15 percent of its administrative staff positions, eliminating more than 1,400 supervisory positions around the country and offering early retirement to about 150,000 workers in an effort to save $100 million a year.
The Postal Service plans to close offices in Lake Mary, Fla., North Reading, Mass., Manchester, N.H., Edison, N.J., Erie, Pa. and Spokane, Wash.
The offices house only administrative functions and those will be assumed by 10 other district offices in the same areas, the Postal Service said.
District-level administrative staff positions are being reduced by 15 percent and more than 1, 400 mail processing supervisor and management positions are being eliminated at nearly 400 facilities around the U.S., the Postal Service said.
The actions announced Friday come after other steps taken in the last year to cut costs including a 500 million work-hour reduction, freezes on executive salaries, hiring and new construction, and consolidation of mail processing operations.

All this bickering and complaining about who does what. Don't wear your hearts on your sleeves. Those of us who work at the PO know there are people that work there that just shouldn't, there are carriers that don't care, and clerks, etc. There does need to be some cut backs to keep our heads above water. All the comments back and forth about what carriers do and don't do is irrelavant, and the comment made about delivering the welfare check was ridiculous, that could be you, remember that the next time you want to be so arrogant.
Chris, there is only 1 Tim working at only 1 Post Office in Whitney,Tx.I was talking about the poster Finally.Maybe you should read before spouting off.I do not know anything about the posters here. That was my point!Just sayin, I'm glad you make more money than I.I never said ANYTHING about full name. You assume the other poster has a legitimate gripe but since I work for USPS I do not get the same consideration. I understand why you choose not to use the Post Office for packages. The same as I choose not to use Fed-Ex because of bad experience with them. k, You get kudos for reading the whole thread. My point was to show that I also can make assumptions about people I do not know and how absurd it is to do so.
No where in the article does it say that anyone is losing a job, just that positions are being reduced. Those people will just be moved into another position within the PS. As to the 150,000 OFFERED early retirement, only a small percentage will take it.
