BAGHDAD (July 9, 2009)--Suicide and roadside bombings Thursday in Iraq left more than 40 people dead and another 100 injured.

An Iraqi police chief says one bomber was wearing a police uniform when he knocked on the door of an anti-terrorism officer in a northern Iraqi city early Thursday morning.

When the man opened the door, the bomber detonated his explosive belt, killing the officer, his wife and son.

As people gathered near the scene, another suicide bomber detonated his explosives belt.

Two other attacks hit in Baghdad.

Explosives experts defused a third bomb in the area.

The attacks follow bombings Wednesday that killed 16 people and injured more than two-dozen others.

The surge of violence comes after last week's withdrawal of U.S. combat forces from Iraqi cities.
