INKOM, Idaho (October 11, 2009)—A teacher died and dozens of high school students were injured when a bus veered off a highway in Idaho and rolled over.

The students are members of a celebrated high school band from American Fork, Utah.

The band's director told the Salt Lake Tribune that woodwind instructor Heather Christensen died while trying to save her students.

John Miller said she tried to grab the steering wheel after the bus driver lost control, but fell out of a window when the bus rolled.

Idaho State Police said a preliminary investigation showed that the bus driver had a medical condition that caused the crash.

Two students were flown by helicopter ambulance to a Pocatello hospital Saturday night.

Ambulances took another 12 students to a hospital with serious injuries.

Thirty others were taken for treatment of minor injuries.

Altogether, there were 50 students, two adults and the driver aboard the bus.

The students were headed home after winning the Idaho State University Band Invitational Competition at Holt Arena in Pocatello.
