First Grader Facing Reform School Gets A Reprieve
Common sense apparently prevailed in the case of a first grader who was facing a stretch in reform school after bringing a folding knife and fork to school.

BEAR, Del. (October 14, 2009)—A first grader in Delaware who was facing a stretch in reform school for bringing his favorite camping utensil to school has gotten a reprieve.

The seven-member school board made a hasty change to its strict code of conduct Tuesday night and voted unanimously to reduce the punishment for kindergartners and first-graders who bring weapons to school or commit other violent offenses to a suspension ranging from three to five days.

Zachary Christie, 6, had faced 45 days in an alternative school for troublemakers after he brought a combination folding knife, fork and spoon to school with which to eat his lunch.

The punishment is one of several in recent years that sparked national debate on whether school systems have gone too far with zero tolerance policies.

my question is why the child had to bring his own eating utensils to school? this was an over reaction, but there are 6 year olds (and younger) who are quite capable of causing bodily harm to others so it is good to be cautious. another thought...surely the parents were aware of the policy...i guess maybe he snuck the utensil out of the house without their knowledge???

As stated before, Nothing will ever be the same in the United States since 9-11, but I still think the school over reacted. It's good to know they re- considered things.

Any idiot with half a brain could see that the punishment for this was way over the line. That's what you get when you put idiots in charge of making the rules and laws.
