RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (November 2, 2009)--Pakistan's army says it has captured a town that served as a Taliban base in the Afghan border region, but insurgents continue to strike in and near the country's cities Monday.
The deadliest attack was in Rawalpindi, where the army is headquartered.
A suicide bomber on a motorbike struck outside a bank, killing at least 35 people.
A second attack struck a police roadblock outside the eastern city of Lahore.
Officials said police officers were about to search a car that had pulled up to the checkpoint, when the attacker detonated his explosives, injuring seven officers.
Two were reported to be in critical condition.
Meanwhile, the U.N. said the spreading violence is forcing it to pull some of its staff out of Pakistan and suspend work along the Afghan border.
Islamist insurgents have struck repeatedly in Pakistan in the past month, killing more than 300 people in apparent retaliation for an army offensive in the northwest stronghold of South Waziristan.
