ROME (November 17, 2009)--Pope Benedict addressed a world food summit shortly after it rebuffed a U.N. appeal to commit billions of dollars annually to helping farmers in poor countries and said, "opulence and waste" have no place in a world where hunger is growing.

Dozens of heads of state and government ministers rejected the U.N.'s call to commit $44 billion annually for agricultural development in poor nations as a way to enable farmers to produce enough food for their own countries.

U.N. officials estimate one-sixth of the world's people don't get enough to eat.
