PHOENIX (March 6, 2010)--Nine people, including the bus driver, were in critical condition Saturday, a day after a bus accident on Interstate 10 near Phoenix that left six people dead and 16 injured.

Federal officials said the bus was operating illegally and said the operating company had been told not to carry passengers across state lines.

The charter bus was traveling from central Mexico to Los Angeles when it hit a pickup and veered onto the interstate’s shoulder.

The driver overcorrected, authorities said, and the bus rolled once.

The roof was crushed.

Arizona safety officials said their investigation would include whether the driver, who was critically injured, was fatigued.

The vehicle's maintenance history will also be reviewed.
