WACO (September 12, 2013)--Baylor showed off its newly completed Baylor Research and Innovation Collaborative center Thursday.

The 330,000 square foot research facility occupies what once was a General Tire Company tire manufacturing plant and is designed to give students, researchers, organizations and private companies physical space for labs, research centers and workforce training.

The center now provides space for the Center for Astrophysics, Space Physics and Engineering Research or CASPER, a Quantum Optics Laboratory, Advanced Composite Technologies Research, Electrical Engineering Research, LAUNCH, an Innovative Business Accelerator, L-3 Communications and additional space for future partners.

The tire plant was built during World War II and at one time employed 1,400 before closing down in 1986.

The facility's stakeholders include the City of Waco, City of Bellmead, Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce, Cooper Foundation, McLennan County, Texas State Technical College, Waco Foundation and Baylor University.
