WASHINGTON (October 2, 2013)--U.S. businesses added 166,000 jobs last month, a modest gain that suggests hiring continues to improve at a modest pace, according to a survey released Wednesday by payroll company ADP.
ADP said employers added 159,000 jobs in August and 161,000 in July, both slightly lower than the original estimates.
ADP's figures often diverge from the government's more comprehensive jobs report, but they may end up being the only measure of September hiring for a while.
The U.S. Labor Department will have to delay its September jobs report, scheduled for Friday, if the government shutdown extends past Wednesday.
