NEW YORK (January 22, 2013)--Stocks closed modestly higher Tuesday after big companies including DuPont and Travelers reported that earnings that came in ahead of Wall Street's expectations.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 62 points to close at 13,712 Tuesday.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose six to end the day at 1,492.
The Nasdaq composite average rose eight points to close at 3,143.
Earnings so far have been strong enough to drive a five-day winning streak for the S&P 500.
Chemical maker DuPont and the insurer Travelers were among the major U.S. companies reporting earnings that beat analysts' estimates.
Both stocks rose about 2 percent, lifting the Dow average.
Rising stocks outnumbered falling ones two to one on the New York Stock Exchange where volume was slightly above the recent average at 3.5 billion shares.
