Stocks Close Lower As Focus Shifts To Earnings

NEW YORK (October 9, 2012)--Stocks ended lower Tuesday on Wall Street after a weak forecast for global growth from the International Monetary Fund.

Now investors are turning their attention to corporate earnings reports.

The Dow Jones industrial average ended the day down 110 points at 13,473.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index finishes down 14 points at 1,441.

The Nasdaq composite index was down 47 at 3,065.

Analysts expect earnings for Standard & Poor's 500 companies to be lower than a year ago, which would be the first time that has happened in almost three years.

About four stocks fell for every one that rose Tuesday.

Early figures show trading volume was about average, about 3.2 billion shares.
