Stocks Drift Lower Monday

NEW YORK (September 24, 2012)--Stocks closed slightly lower Monday on Wall Street as concerns about the European economy overshadowed recent excitement about help from the world's central banks.

The Dow Jones industrial average finished down 20 points to close at 13,559.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index ended the day off three at 1,457, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 19 to close at 3,161.

Declining stocks outnumbered advancers by about 3-to-2.

Early calculations showed volume was lighter than average at just less than 3 billion shares.

Apple stock fell 1.3 percent and back under $700 a share after missing some analysts' targets for early sales of the iPhone 5.
