NEW YORK (April 13, 2012)--Stocks closed lower on Friday and finished the week down after worries about Europe returned.
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 137 points to close at 12,850 Friday.
The Dow was down all day and the losses got worse in the last half-hour.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 17 points to close at 1,370.
The Nasdaq composite fell 44 points to close at 3,011.
The Dow ended the week down 1.6 percent, its second down week in a row, although it’s still up 5.2 percent for the year.
Stock indexes in Europe fell after borrowing costs for Spain's government rose again.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones three-to-one on the New York Stock Exchange where volume was light at 3.5 billion shares.
