DALLAS (September 25, 2012)--Cyprian Akamnonu, a co-defendant of a Dallas-area doctor who’s charged in a massive Medicare and Medicaid fraud scheme, has agreed to plead guilty to recruiting patients and billing for unnecessary medical services.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's office in Dallas said Akamnonu signed a plea agreement Sunday to one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud that calls for a 10-year maximum sentence.

According to court documents, Akamnonu admitted he had his home health agency sign up Medicare clients.

Then his company billed Medicare for more services than were actually provided.

Dr. Jacques Roy is accused of signing off on false paperwork in a scheme alleged to have reached more than $375 million.

Akamnonu's attorney declined to comment.

Roy’s attorney Ali Fazel says he is still reviewing all materials related to the case.
