KANSAS CITY, Mo. (July 17, 2013)—Demand for Twinkies and CupCakes is at a record high since the snack cakes returned to shelves less than three days ago, Hostess Brands said Wednesday.
The products disappeared from shelves almost eight months ago after the company that used to make them shut down its plants and said that it was going out of business, but the company has new owners and the snack cakes are back.
The Twinkies are a bit smaller than before, but that hasn't affected their popularity.
Hostess said sales of its products are seven times greater than historic levels, and orders are three to six times greater than production capacity, even though it is running bakeries at maximum levels.
Retailers told Hostess this week that they sold out of the snack cakes within hours of putting them on the shelves.
