Violinist, Cellist Perform While Hundreds Of Miles Apart

PHILADELPHIA (October 2, 2012)--Technology that allows musicians hundreds of miles apart to perform together in real time was dramatically demonstrated in Philadelphia, where a violinist and cellist hundreds of miles apart played together as if they were on the same stage.

Several hundred engineers, researchers and scientists in the conference hall jumped to their feet and cheered after the performance Tuesday at the Internet2 fall meeting at a downtown hotel.

A violinist on stage in Philadelphia and a cellist projected on a video screen from DeKalb, Ill., performed a tricky duet to show off LOLA, which is the nickname for the low-latency audio and video software developed by researchers in Italy.

LOLA reduces transmission delays, or latency, to 35 milliseconds. That's like having the musicians on the same stage.
