“Apes” Ruled At Weekend Box Office

NEW YORK (July 20, 2014) "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" outmuscled a trio of new films to rule at the box office for a second second-straight week with an estimated $36 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The film easily bested the horror thriller "The Purge: Anarchy." Universal's low-budget sequel to last year's surprise hit, "The Purge," opened with $28.4 million.

In third place was Disney's "Planes: Fire & Rescue," the animated sequel to 2013's "Planes."

It made $18 million.

The Jason Segel, Cameron Diaz R-rated comedy "Sex Tape" failed to turn on moviegoers.

The Sony Pictures release opened in fourth place with $15 million.
