NEW YORK (May 12, 2014) Fox will air new series on six of seven nights in the fall, including the much-awaited "Batman" prequel "Gotham."
Fox and NBC were both presenting new schedules to advertisers on Monday.
Fox has the larger immediate challenge, as ratings have plummeted this season in large part due to the sinking fortunes of "American Idol."
"Gotham" will air on Mondays, following a 12-year-old future caped crusader in a city teeming with crime.
An unscripted series, "Utopia," that will place people in an undeveloped area and ask them to develop a new civilization will air Tuesdays and Fridays in the fall.
Fox is canceling "Enlisted," ''Dads," ''Rake" and "Surviving Jack."
During NBC's schedule preview to advertisers on Monday, the network ran a clip of "The Mysteries of Laura," a new series that begins this fall starring Debra Messing as a homicide detective..
One scene showed her recoiling after rushing into a schoolroom where the walls and windows are smeared in bright red.
"This is a depraved, unspeakable act,” she said.
But the scene has a punch line.
It turns out her character's two children, also covered in red, got a little wild with paint during an art project.
