MEMPHIS, Tenn. (May 16, 2013)--Decades after the label died, Stax Records’ legacy in Memphis is still strong.
A decade has passed since the Stax Museum of American Soul Music opened on the site of the old Stax Records studio, where Otis Redding, Booker T. and the MGs, Sam & Dave and others created some of American popular music's most memorable songs.
Tourists flock daily to the museum, located in a neighborhood appropriately called "Soulsville."
Next to the museum sits the Stax Music Academy, an after-school program in which teenagers from some of Memphis' poorest neighborhoods learn how to dance, sing, and play instruments.
The academy's students play annual shows in Memphis and have toured to Washington, Italy and Australia, helping spread the soulful "Memphis Sound."
Soulsville Charter School is adjacent to the museum and music academy.
