NEW YORK (July 20, 2012)--Broadcast Music Incorporated, the rights management company that represents more than a half-million songwriters, composers and music publishers, will honor Carey as one of its "Icons" at the upcoming BMI Urban Awards.

The award is given to an artist who has influenced generations in the urban music scene.

Past winners include The Jacksons, James Brown and Al Green.

The award will be presented on Sept. 7 at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, California.
