AUSTIN (July 4, 2012)--A new Central Texas radio station with the iconic call letters KOKE-FM is set to go on the air this weekend.

The original KOKE made a splash on the national radio scene in the early 1970s, helping launch a format known as "progressive country" that featured an eclectic mix of country acts along with non-country performers.

The call letters disappeared in 1987.

The new locally owned station set to sign on Sunday will feature a similar format, with a focus on Austin- and Texas-centric country music.

Bob Cole, a former morning radio host, is among those who teamed up to acquire the frequency.

In 1974, Billboard magazine called KOKE the "most innovative station in the country."

"It's legendary. That's what we're out to re-create,” Cole said.
