PIERRE, S.D. (November 15, 2013) Some farmers and ranchers in South Dakota say they’re unhappy with the choice of Joan Jett to ride on the state’s Dakota tourism float in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
They’re steamed because Jett is a vegetarian and animal rights activist, while the livestock industry is big in South Dakota.
Cory Eich of the South Dakota Cattlemen's Association calls the choice of Jett "a huge blunder."
South Dakota Tourism Secretary Jim Hagen says none of the artists the state proposed were available to ride on the float, so Macy's chose Jett.
Jett’s spokeswoman Kristin Foster says Jett has played in South Dakota many times and is a fan of the state.
She said Jett simply accepted an offer to ride on the float.
