Texas School District Cancels Penguin Play

AUSTIN (November 11, 2012)--Austin school district officials have canceled the performance of a play at an elementary school about two male penguin parents that are given a fertilized egg and raise the hatchling.

"And Then Came Tango" was written by Emily Freeman, a graduate theater student at the University of Texas and is based on the story of Roy and Silo, two real penguins at New York's Central Park Zoo that were given the egg to hatch, and Tango, their hatchling.

The Austin American-Statesman reported that UT students performed the play for second-graders at Austin's Lee Elementary School.

District officials then raised concerns about age appropriateness and canceled further performances.

It was the first time the Austin Independent School District had canceled a UT performance.

Freeman says the play is "about different families."
