(February 27, 2013)—Variety is taking down its 3-year-old paywall.
The chairman and CEO of Variety's parent firm called the paywall "an interesting experiment that didn't work and said that dropping it Friday represents what company insiders call "the end of an error."
Once the paywall comes down, Variety will put out a new one-day-a-week-only print edition, while making its available online without a subscriber fee.
