MONTERREY, Mexico (September 2, 2010)—Soldiers shot and killed 25 suspects in a gun battle Thursday near the U.S. border, the Mexican military said.

A spokesman said soldiers were patrolling around noon Thursday in the town of General Trevino, about 80 miles southwest of McAllen when they came under fire from gunmen on a ranch.

The troops returned fire and killed at least 25 people.

The spokesman says three people believed to be kidnapping victims were rescued.

He was not authorized to be quoted by name.
