A | A | A

(January 14, 2008)—The crash happened shortly after 5pm at the intersection of Aviation Dr and Hwy 84, just outside of Bellmead.

A Chevrolet Cavalier was traveling east on Hwy 84 when it struck the back of a Semi-Tractor Dump-Trailer.

The posted speed limit at the intersection was 70mph; DPS on the scene reported that the Cavalier had failed control its speed.

The driver of the Cavalier, 28-year-old Teara Hagood, of Hubbard, was pronounced dead at the scene then later taken to Waco Mortuary, where next-of-kin could be notified.

The rig had been stopped at the intersection, waiting for a red signal light to change.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, William Master, of Coolidge, was not injured.

No other passengers were reported to have been in either of the vehicles.

Hagood was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the wreck.

The report was filed by Arturo Perez of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The yellow light is too short: it is less than 5 seconds long, and the speed limit is upwards to 70mph. Plus: there is a disconnect between vehicles in the turn lane and onto these roads from the airport/ TSTC and the signal changes.

This was my cousin, she was not only a family member, but a wonderful friend to all that knew her. She was a wonderful mother and her daughters were her life!!! This wasn't only a tragidy to my family but to all that knew and loved Teara. this was not only a mistake, but a very terrible loss for everyone. I pray that there will not be anymore losses due to malfunctions in a light.

This light is very hard to see at any time of day, however in the afternoon when traveling east the sun is beaming from behind and reflecting off of the lights making it even harder to see. There have been several accidents at this light already, heaven forbid that there be anymore. If this light was put there for Sanderson Farm trucks then not only do they need to slow down traffic to 55 until after the light but they also need to put up warning signs and ripple strips, and if not for sanderson farms then the lights need to just be taken down! Teara was my dear sister in law and my absolute best friend. We miss her very dearly, may she rest in peace.

I am the mother of Teara Hagood. I was told that people were writing here.It has taken me this long to get here.I can not express the anger I feel about what happened and where it happened.I too feel like it is crazy to have a 70mph speed zone there. My life and the life of our fsmily and most especially the lives of her children will never be the same.I feel like I have to do something to prevent another family from suffering the great loss our family has. I would like to thank EVERYONE for their prayers. It is all that is getting us through. My GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

My suggestion would be to possibley contact your local TxDot office and complain about this light and the problems it is causing or ask them who we should file a complaint with. It is way to dangerous for us to not try and do something about it or wait for someone else to complain. my email is texnpryd@hotmail.com if anyone comes up with a link or suggestion I would be more than happy to pass it along to all my contacts and sign it as well. The funeral was today. I was unable to attend, but did go to visitation. She was beautiful and will be missed so much. I dont want this to happen to another family!

Like others have said, I knew there would be problems when that light was installed. You don't put a red light in a 70 mph zone! It should be a maximum 55 mph with an advance warning sign of Be Prepared To Stop or Signal Light Ahead. There is a light at Hwy 6 (towards Valley Mills) and Hwy 185. It is an intersection on busy Hwy 6 where the speed limit reduces to 55. There is a sign that starts flashing Be Prepared To Stop before the light changes. You don't see that type of sign very often, but I really appreciate it. I travel through both of these lights often and hate the one on 84, especially when driving west into the sun.

To those who have posted. Thank you so much. I agree that light is in a bad place. In a 70 mph zone there is not enough time to stop. So now what can we do to change things. Either have the speed limit lowered in that area or can they fix that light so that it only turns red when there is a car trying to turn off Aviation Pkwy? Can the adjust the time of the yellow light to give more time for one to stop?

This light is more of a hassle than a help. I am a paramedic/firefighter, and I worked the accident there on Monday. I travel that highway every work day, and have seen multiple vehicles run the light, or screech to a halt there when the light changes, even when no traffic is crossing. It is a shame for someone to lose their life over a useless positioning of traffic signals...apparently another failure by the highway department. Mrs. Hagood's famly is in my prayers.

My husband made the comment that as soon as they put that light up there would be accidents. This should have been better planned and organized. Now our community has lost a friend, mother, sister, daughter and grand-daughter to a ill-orgnaized plan to control traffic! Our thoughts and prayers are with you all

This is such a tragedy. As soon as that light was put up I knew something like this was going to happen. This is a HIGHWAY and there should not be a light where there is not enough traffic going to the side road to cause a fatality like this and if something is not done, it IS going to happen again. Jamie our prayers are with you.

I had only met Ms. Hagood a few times, she was a wonderful woman and a wonderful mother. Something needs to be fixed so this does not happen again. Now two beautiful little girls are left without a mother, a family is left without a daughter, a sister, a niece, and an aunt. Im praying for the family.

I agree with Albert and Liza. I travel on 84 everyday, I even seen the accident on my way home. My heart sank because I knew it was going to happen sooner or later. Jamie and Sheila, My sympathy to you and your faimly. You guys are in my prayers. *REST IN PEACE TEARA HAGOOD*

That was my dear sister. The yellow light doesn't give enough time to stop, especially at 70 mph. This has got to change, so that other families doesn't go through what mine has.

Posted by: Albert Location: Waco on Jan 15, 2008 at 08:48 PM
This intersection was put in for the chicken farm trucks to have better access to Aviation. 70mph is to fast to have to come to a complete stop. Look at all the black marks on the west bound lanes, hope the family sues someone. What a waste.

Posted by: Sheila Location: Waco on Jan 15, 2008 at 08:25 PM
Thank you for your sympathy. PLease keep our family in your prayers. It is my beautiful niece who was killed in this accident.

Posted by: Liza Location: Waco on Jan 15, 2008 at 03:25 PM
Needless to say that I felt apprehensive when they installed the lights at this intersection. I knew that it wouldn't be too long before there was a fatality. At that particular time of day it is sometimes hard to see the lights when the sun is shining directly at them when driving east of Bellmead on highway 84. My sympathy goes out to the families.
