Doctors in Houston have performed a fourth operation as they continue to rebuild the shattered face of Waco domestic violence victim, Carolyn Thomas, who was shot at point blank range in December 2003 with a .44 cal. pistol.

During the two-hour operation, Doctors finished reconstructing her upper lip.

Later this year doctors plan to implant a prosthetic eye and nose.

Thomas was recovering Tuesday at Houston’s Methodist Hospital.

In April, a Waco jury returned two life sentences against Terrence Dewain Kelly, 32, who was convicted of murder and attempted murder in the shooting that left Thomas, his former girlfriend, disfigured and Thomas’ mother dead.

Thomas’ story of survival has attracted national media attention.

She wasn’t expected to survive, but she beat the odds, although she was unable to eat and had to breath through a tracheotomy tube.

In February, a team of doctors in Houston performed the first in a series of intricate operations to rebuild her shattered face and restore her shattered life.

The attention to her plight turned her into an articulate activist against domestic violence.
