(April 30, 20080—Killeen’s Red Light Camera system is online at several intersections in the city, police announced Wednesday.

For the next 30 days, drivers who are caught on camera running red lights at the intersections will receive warnings.

But after that, the citation will be in the mail.

The city plans to install cameras at 195 and Central Texas Expressway; Trimmier and Central Texas Expressway; W. S. Young and Central Texas Expressway; Stan Schlueter and Central Texas Expressway, and Trimmier and Lowes Boulevard.

The intersections were chosen after an 18-month study of accident data and an evaluation of red light violations, police said.

Warning signs will be placed at intersections where cameras are in operation to let motorists know the system is in operation.

Mike read the post it clearly states "For the next 30 days, drivers who are caught on camera running red lights at the intersections will receive warnings." I am sure it will go to the individual that registered the car, then its up to you the owner to dispute it in court if you see fit. If you don't like don't like dont lend your car to someone who may get a ticket.

so Steve, who is the warning going to be issued too?.... if your wife is driving your car and she gets a ticket from the camera, that means you have to pay the fine before a warrant is issued for your arrest and it will go on your driving record, right?

Posted by: Steve Location: Killeen on May 2, 2008 at 01:38 PM
Mike, the warning is for the first month.............After that you’re getting a ticket. And yes it will hold up in court, it has in the past in other cities and will in the future. It’s about time we did this in Killeen. Now if we can just clean up the drugs, prostitution, robberies and killings we will be good to go.

I am happy to see these cameras installed in Killeen. They are needed in the surrounding areas of Ft Hood as well. When drivers do not want to comply with the traffic laws, well then, hit them where it hurts...in their pocketbooks. Driving is a privilege not a right. This is a public safety issue and I thank the city of Killeen for trying to resolve the problem of these reckless drivers. I wish there was a way to ticket these drivers who cut you off sharply too. Too many innocent people have lost their life due to immature and reckless drivers.

i going to take off my plates. so they want know who i am. (lol)

the reason they only give warnings is because..getting a ticket from a camera will never hold up in a court of law. the pictures will only prove who owns the vehicle not who is actualing driving the vehicle at that specific time of the offense..

The article is NOT about fixing the light systems at intersections, it's about catching the idiots who run the lights. If people actually stopped at the red lights, there will be less accidents, and therefore traffic will flow better. Just hope that something is actually done about the tickets being mailed out, because if not, the red light running, will NEVER end!

I agree with George, and they are not always police officers, I have seen A LOT of soldiers drive like idiots, they cut you off, speed, and ride your arse, if everyone would stop being in such a big hurry to get somewhere, there would be less accidents!

I think the camera's are a great idea, however, what will be done to those that get tickets, whether it's one or several and don't pay them? Or take care of them?

Posted by: Carmen Location: Willowsprings on May 2, 2008 at 09:25 AM
Im glad they're doing that but PLEASE, CAN THEY FIX THE TRAFFIC TOO ON WILLOWSPRINGS BY 7-11. THAT INTERSECTION BY WALES DRIVE S-U-C-K-S!!!! NO ONE WANTS TO GIVE WAY.

The point of the cameras is to make it safer for everyone to drive in Killeen. With the great turnover we have with the military the city will always be making money off the cameras. So what's the beef? The city makes money here rather than taxing home owners; folks get used to leaving a little earlier so they can STOP at the red lights; the rest of us who do all we can to never run a red light are safer. Seems like a WIN-WIN-WIN situation for ALL of us. By the way, I was at the corner of Trimmier and 190 headed north on Wednesday evening and saw the FLASH as a POLICE car when through a red light - he was NOT in a hurry - did NOT turn on his lights etc. I wonder if HE will get a ticket?? Bottom line - it's crazy enough out there we ALL need to drive defensively not aggressively AND we need to remember that it just plain takes longer to get anywhere in Killeen nowdays.

Well, I think the city needs to fix the light system at most intersections; it is horrible. Going south on W.S. Young Drive towards Highway 190 is horrible, especially the timing sequence at "Mall" Drive.

It's about time. I am tired of these crazy drivers. It is about time they got a reality check!!!!

Posted by: GUNSMOKE Location: Nolanville on May 1, 2008 at 03:09 PM
One thing that I have noticed is that the flow of traffic at the Trimmer and Lowe's Blvd would flow much better if they would reverse the sequence of who goes first. Quie often it is clogged becuse the traffic comeing from Lowe's Blvd is blocking traffic that is trying to pull out onto Trimmer from the east side of that intersection. If the east side pulled through the light first, it would'nt get so backed up.

Sorry, didn't think of this till I posted. I wish they would do this in Cove. At the 190 & Georgetown Rd. light, you have to wait for at least three cars to go after your light turns green, also at the 190 & Ave D. You risk your life going on a green light in Copperas Cove.

Hurrah! It's about time!

The cameras won't be in operation for very long. There was a national news story in the last thirty days detailing how cities are disconnecting their traffic light cameras because the number of tickets for running lights had decreased too much. They plainly stated the cities were losing too much money by not writing tickets and couldn't afford to maintain the cameras with, "other funds". So, this will be a novelty for Killeen for a year or so, then the cameras will just be cutoff.

Now if we could get a traffic light installed at the intersection of 195 & 201 that would be wonderful! There have been several accidents there that could have been avoided. This is a very very busy intersection and everyone is in such a big hurry.

I know there are good intentions with these cameras but I don't think its a good idea. This area is way too populated and busy. I'm not saying that it gives people the right to break the law. Have any of you been stuck at the intersection and saw how many times it flashes after each red light? I think it would actually increase speeding on the roads with these cameras. People would attempt to get through the intersection as fast as possible to avoid the flashes. Where would all the money go? I know a profit, so to say, will be made. They had these red light cameras back in NC. Some cities went to an appeals court because of the amount of money they profited. What about all of the out of state license plates out here? Would that be an obstacle in sending that driver a ticket?

Texaslegal, I used to be a police dispatcher. I can tell you why it may seem like they're never there: it's because we have to constantly dispatch them to accident, shooting, stabbing and domestic violence calls. Trust me though...they're out there..they just have to prioritize (sadly).

Let's put camera's on School buses and emergency vehicles also, I have seen people pass them like it was OK, or not pull to the side of the road like they are supposed to. Since we are on the subject of laws, why does Killeen not enforce their noise ordinance? I have been by cars that make my 1 ton truck rattle, that is crazy, if I wanted to listen to "your" music, I will play it myself, I don't want to hear what you are listening to, and some of the music I don't want my children to hear because of the foul language used, or the songs meaning.

I have driven Hwy. 195 daily for 34 years and the people I have seen driving with reckless abandon are almost always wearing a uniform. The same uniform that runs red lights, speeds through school zones, pulls into traffic and causes the traffic to have to slam on their brakes, and refuses to stop at stop signs.

People drive like idiots around Killeen and you never see a cop anywhere. Why is that?

Posted by: themrs Location: harker heights on May 1, 2008 at 06:11 AM
I am actually excited to see this start! I cannot believe how often I see cars simply blow through a red light yet they continue to make their turn or go through!O and then they flip ME off for honking at them when I have a green light! Can we post the pics on the internet too?

It is about time, I am sick and tired of idiots running the lights in Killeen, it is like they think they own the road. For those of you returning from Iraq this is not Route Irish and there is a possible IED in the road or an ambush at every corner, forget about driving there and starting thinking about driving here. For those that use their cell phones while driving, get a hands free or hang up and drive.
