(May 8, 2008)—A 19-year-old Fort Hood soldier died late Wednesday night when the SUV he was driving shot off a highway entrance ramp, crossed four lanes of traffic, ran up a concrete embankment, struck a pillar and rolled.

Jarad Alan Gammill was driving a 1999 Mitsubishi Montero SUV west on the U.S. 190 ramp from Fort Hood Street in Killeen around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said just before entering the highway, the SUV veered across a grassy area and into the westbound lanes, crossed the center median and the two eastbound lanes, ran up a concrete embankment on the south side of 190 below the Pershing Park pedestrian bridge and struck one of the concrete pillars.

The vehicle was forced to the top of the embankment, and then rolled one time to the bottom and landed right side up.

Gammill was not wearing a seatbelt, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:11 p.m.

An autopsy was ordered.

I don't think that being deployed in a war zone and then coming back is making our soldiers become bad drivers. Many here are that way and have never left the country or seen one day of war. You have too many people in one area, and a huge population of 18-25 year old males. This has been a problem here for years, just as it is around any other military installation. We were here 10 years ago, and it was the same thing, even with less troops and people. Hwy 195, was off limits then because of all the soldiers being killed on it. All of those wrecks were due to speed, alcohol, and driving while tired. All the same reasons you see these days. It's poor judgement and driving skills plain and simple! Slow down, pay attention, and stay off the cell phones. And by all means wear a seat belt!!!!

I fell for the family but I agree with Jeff, we have had way to many accidents in the past year. I have noticed that everyone seems to be more agressive, I don't know if because of the Military or not, but lets please slow up and give the other person a break. I know several wives of solidors that stated they have to tell there husband to stop the car and let them drive because they are driving recklessly and they feel as though they wer in danager. They both spoke with there husbands and they agreeded that they are tought to not stop on the roads. They both relized what there wife was talking about and rethought their driving habits prior to driving again. Please lets all be safe.

I know this kids father. He works with me. His son, unfortunately, had a habit of driving recklessly, without a seatbelt, and speeding. Numerous wrecks. Please keep his father and mother in your prayers.

I keep being told that the military is instructed to drive fast and run over everything to get out of harms way while at war. I don't know if this man was just back from the war but if this is true and I'm not trying to sound mean but if so maby the army might want to keep the people from driving for a short time while they can be debreafed and brought back to safe driving habits. There has been alot of real bad accidernt and agreesive driving here for past year or so.
