(May 13, 2008)--A dozen family members were in custody Tuesday in connection with a marriage fraud ring after a four-year investigation by immigration authorities.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents arrested 12 of 16 people Tuesday who were indicted on charges including conspiracy to commit fraud; misusing visas, permits and other documents; Social Security number fraud; and aggravated identity theft. The 16 people indicted represent three generations of an extended family.
Authorities say foreign nationals paid as much as $12,000 each to marry U.S. citizens.
Their marital status allowed the foreign nationals to apply for permanent residency and citizenship.
