(May 15, 2008)--A renewable energy company founded by billionaire T. Boone Pickens is buying 667 turbines from General Electric for what backers say should be the world’s largest energy project.
Mesa Power today announced the Pampa Wind Project will use GE turbines in the Texas Panhandle.
They can each produce a thousand megawatts of electricity.
The project's $2 billion first phase, which is one of four planned, will generate enough electricity to power more than 300,000 average U.S. homes.
When completed in 2014, it's expected to offer more than 4,000 megawatts of electricity, enough for 1.3 million homes.
Pickens, who heads Dallas-based BP Capital Management, is a longtime proponent of alternative fuel.
He also founded a company called Clean Energy to advocate the use of natural gas as a transportation fuel.
