(May 15, 2008)—A former soldier who grew up in Texas may use an insanity defense when the case goes to trial on charges of murder and rape in Iraq.
Attorneys for Steven D. Green, who's originally from Midland, offered details in two motions filed Thursday in federal court in Louisville, Ky.
Green is accused of attacking and killing an Iraqi teenager and her family in 2006.
He faces trial next April 27.
The 22-year-old could get a death sentence if convicted on 16 charges that include premeditated murder and aggravated sexual assault.
Green was deployed with the 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, Ky.
Green is being prosecuted in federal court because he was discharged from the military for having an anti-social personality disorder before he was indicted.
