Compound Raid: State Concedes Newborn’s Mother Not A Minor Save Email Print

A | A | A

(May 16, 2008)--Lawyers for Texas have conceded in court that a woman from a polygamous sect who gave birth this week while in state custody is not a minor.

The attorneys said during a hearing Thursday in Travis County that the woman is free to return to her home or can remain with her three children, including the newborn, who remain under protective care.

Last month, Child Protective Services took more than 460 children from the Yearning for Zion ranch near Eldorado into custody over abuse allegations.

Sect members have denied any abuse.

Nearly 50 of the children were transferred to the care of Waco’s Methodist Children’s Home.

Dan Jessop sought the hearing on behalf of his wife, Louisa, and their three children in hopes of reuniting his family, but Judge Darlene Byrne ruled her court has no jurisdiction in the matter because a judge in San Angelo had already ruled that the state could keep custody of the children.
