Central Texas Post Office Renamed For Fallen Marine Saturday Save Email Print

(November 13, 2007)—The Round Rock Post Office will be renamed during a ceremony Saturday in honor of Marine Cpl. Steven Gill, 24, who died in July 2005 in the explosion of a roadside bomb during combat operations in Iraq.

Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, introduced a resolution in 2007 to change the post office’s name to honor

”As we honor our soldiers on this upcoming Memorial Day,” Carter said, “I am proud to offer this small tribute to one of those heroes.”

“Steven Gill gave his life so that we may enjoy the freedoms of this great nation,” Carter said.

The ceremony is at 10 a.m. Saturday at the post office at 797 Sam Bass Rd. in Round Rock.

Gill was born in Houston, but his family moved to Round Rock in 1993.

After high school, he enrolled in Austin’s Concordia University with the goal of becoming a Lutheran youth minister.

But the 9/11 attacks, Carter said, “changed the course of Steven’s life.”

Gill enlisted in the Marines and after basic training he was assigned to the Marine Reserve’s 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, based in San Antonio.

At the time of his death, his unit was attached to Regimental Combat Team-8, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Last month the U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday gave unanimous approval to a bill that would rename the Lorena Post Office for fallen Marine Gunnery Sgt. John D. Fry.

Fry, 28, of Lorena, died in March 2006 in the explosion of a homemade bomb in Iraq’s volatile Al Anbar Province.

He was assigned to the 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, from Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Thank you for honoring these soldiers and not forgetting them. This touches my heart and I will make a trip to both post offices to show my respect/support. God Bless their families, friends and the towns that are giving them this honor. This is the right thing to do.
