Toddler Crushed By Hummer At Texas Carwash Save Email Print

A | A | A

(July 11, 2008)--Police say the driver of a Hummer that ran over and killed a toddler at a Victoria car wash won't be charged.

The toddler was struck and killed Thursday and later died at Citizens Medical Center, police said.

The toddler and his 6-year-old brother were playing while their parents cleaned their white Mitsubishi sedan when the driver of the Hummer, who had just finished vacuuming his vehicle, pulled forward and struck the boy.

Police say the driver didn't do anything wrong, he just didn't see the small child who had wandered away.

Carwash manager Ernest Hinojosa said he tells people all the time they need to watch their children because they often play in the parking lot.

yes this is a horrible situation and the pain is forever as I have lost 2 son's one to crib death and another in a fire but there is no excuse when there are 2 parents present at a car wash that one of them could not be watching the children to make sure they were doing fine. As for letting them play in such a hazardous area with your backs to them is unexcusable. Children are much more important than a car. This situation is so horrific because it was very preventable. My prayers go to the parents for the guilt and pain they will suffer for the rest of their lives and also to the driver of the other vehicle who will suffer everyday of their life knowing that a child lost thier life through such a tragic event!

To Whatever Location: Killeen on Jul 29, 2008 at 08:25 AM, what are you trying to say? I don't understand what "parent" said to constitute your remark. Some people don't know how to type on here and their comment sounded a little...odd...uneducated, you know what I mean?

Hello! I know this is a month ago. But people need to watch their kids constantly. If you were watching your kids. This would of never happened. Now your child is gone. Its a tragic but now you will know that you need to pay attention.

To "Parent" in Waco. If I had to choose between "Washing my car" and owning a pool. I'd have a dirty truck. With temperatures over 100, I'd much rather be lounging in my backyard than washing a vehicle. Did I say you were an idiot? I'm sorry, I sure meant to.

Just like the story about the child who fell in the pool. PEOPLE WITH SMALL CHILDREN. WATCH THEM! I cant imagine the pain they must be feelin and I know right now they are saying "If only I had been watching them". To Sarah, I dont have to be shot to know it hurts. No one expects them to watch thier children 24/7. But when your around a busy car wash, around a swimming pool or lake or any other potentially dangerous situation then YES, watch them. By the way, I do have children, one 21 and one 14.

This is too sad for all involved! But! People in general have stopped being good parents! A blind eye and It's always someone else's fault! Would you let your kids play in the middle of the highway or play with matches! No! I'm sure Mr. Hinojosa told parents to be careful until he was blue in the face. Parents who are not paying attention to a toddler age 3, can you imagine them being any better when their child is 16!!!!What do you want to bet the family was on Welfare! Those are the only people able to afford for the little extras like carwashes! Stay at home, Stay Alive!

First of all, my prayers are with all through this. Second, I cant believe everyone giving a hard time to anyone involved in this situation. As a parent of two that are now teens, I know for a fact that I have never really paid attention to my children 24/7 never taking an eye off of them and many of you can and should say the same. And if you are making an observation like "the parents should take better care of their children" without having any then you arent even qualified to make such assumptions. Accidents happen, even though some seem so tragic. Don't make either party look back and try to determine what they could have done to prevent this. Instead, take this instance and use it to prevent other mishaps.

Both families of this horrific accident are in my prayers. Such a horrific accident could have been avoided if the parents were paying better attention. Accidents do happen though and now both parties are having to learn a lesson. I have a 3 year old and in a blink of an eye she can disappear just as fast as she can reappear. Both families will be in my prayers.

My prayers are with not only the parents who have lost thier child but for the driver as well who ever he or she is will live with that the rest of his or her life accidents do happen and those of you that are parents dont say your child never got away from you at one time or another they are fast and they can be gone in no time so please dont start with that. My prayers go out to all of them ...

A clean vehicle isn't the main point, the point of this areticle is that parents need to watch their kids. For the record I still wash my truck every week.

Posted by: parent Location: waco on Jul 12, 2008 at 01:38 PM
ur right carolyn, the prices for gas food and everything else, who needs a clean car I havent wash mine in month, to busytaking kids swimming in pool in backyard.

Posted by: Carolyn Location: Bellmead on Jul 11, 2008 at 06:05 PM
Sorry for the loss of your child but people need to get their priorities straight, and with the high price of gas and groceries and everything else who gives a hoot about a clean vehicle.

Posted by: Parent Location: Waco on Jul 11, 2008 at 06:03 PM
This is a very sad story. To the families, they will both be in my prayers.

I agree with Linda. I would like to add that I think the parents should be the ones charged. If they were fullfilling their responsabilities as parents their kid would be safe and sound. I feel sorry for the 6 year old.

Posted by: Shea Location: killeen on Jul 11, 2008 at 04:45 PM
Well put Linda, although you repeated yourself and stated the obvious!

Posted by: linda Location: central, texas on Jul 11, 2008 at 11:08 AM
It was not the driver's fault but it is the parents fault why in the world would you not keep your small children close by at at place where there are vehicles. Because of the parents unattentiveness they have lost a child and the driver is not at fault is feeling very sad and bad also.
