(July 17, 2008)—Dynegy, Inc. and the LS Power Group, which are building a 900-megawatt coal-fired power plant just outside of Riesel east of Waco have donated $10,000 to the Riesel Independent School District.
The companies say the donation will be used to repair roofs a Riesel High School and other district buildings and to fix school parking lots.
“Dynegy’s volunteer and philanthropy focus is on enriching our communities’ educational assets. We’re so pleased to provide this donation to help Riesel schools,” said Mike Herfurth, Director of Construction for Sandy Creek.
Work got underway on the Sandy Creek Coal Plant earlier this year, but residents in the area of the site are divided over the impact.
Some residents applaud the coal-fired plant for the jobs it will bring in the short term while it’s being built and in the long term after it’s in operation, but others are concerned about the environmental impact, despite assurances from the operators that the plant will use the latest technology to minimize emissions.
