Elderly Texas Man Blamed For Two Accidents, One Of Them Deadly Save Email Print

A | A | A

(July 18, 2008)—A grand jury will review evidence after police say a 70-year-old driver caused a fatal rollover by making an illegal left turn in Lufkin and then just hours later drove into the back of a stopped car, setting off an eight-vehicle chain reaction pileup that left the elderly man and another person injured.

A medical advisory board will review whether Isaac Melvin Milstid of Houston should have his driver's license revoked, authorities said, and case is also expected to go before a grand jury.

Police allege Milstid made an illegal left turn early Wednesday afternoon in Lufkin that caused a car in which five people were riding to roll, killing Bertress Allen, 75, of Gladewater.

A 5-year-old passenger was ejected onto the highway.

Lufkin police say Milstid didn't show signs of being intoxicated or of having health problems.

But four hours later, in Diboll, police say Milstid was driving about 70 miles-per-hour when he rear-ended a car that was stopped at a red light.

That caused a chain-reaction that led to accidents involving five other cars and a tractor-trailer.

Milstid and two others were injured in the second accident.

Milstid was cited for failure to control speed in the second accident.

Instead of making people who are 65 and older take a test every year, why not have EVERYONE retake their test every year? Just because someone is 65 years old doesn't mean they can't drive. Read the other news stories about drivers killing other people. One is a teen-age girl and the other is a 23 year old drunk. Passing a drivers test doesn't mean you'll pay attention to the road, or not drink, or not speed. All it means is you get a new license, and what does that have to do with John Mccain? I'd rather an old Vet lead my country than a young muslim!.

I agree with having a person restested after 65, yes people to age differently but there are some people out there that our 82 that are great drivers and they won't have a problem passing the test again. But there are those people who should not be on the road at all, and why risk it. It's better to be safe than sorry, I would be more comfortable with that with my family traveling these roads everyday!

If there is a law that tells you how old you have to be to drive, there should be a law that says you can't drive after a certain age, and failed tests. Come on people, this is Texas. You know we grew up on farms and were driving tractors and 5 speed farm trucks by the time we were 10! But I still had to wait until I was 16 to get a license and drive on paved roads. Thinker, you are right. Below... when you get older your mentality does not decline. Reflexes, yes. Mentality, no.

This man obviously needs his licence taken away. For those of you that say a 65 year old should be retested every year...thats stupid. Your age shouldent matter you should be tested according to your good or bad record. I have a 82 year old aunt that drives and i ride with her every now and again and she has 20/20 vision...is a great driver...and has no decline in health or reflexes. She has never been in an accident and the last time for her to get a pulled over(or get a ticket) was in 1959.

It would be interesting to know this man's driving history. 70 isn't all that old- some of them are out dancing, running marathons, etc. If we think the elderly are dangerous and need to renew their licenses annually - then so should the teenagers - talk about dangerous!!

revoke his D.L. and make him financially responsible for these victims; reading below...'biyearly' isn't a word!

Posted by: THinker Location: TX on Jul 19, 2008 at 10:21 AM
how many of yall saying he is too old to drive are going to vote for Mcain for President? You will give him the nuclear code but you won't let him drive?

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 18, 2008 at 11:32 PM
this is why people over the age of 65 should have to renew their licenses yearly or biyearly....their health and mentality is declining...

Posted by: Frank Location: Kempner on Jul 18, 2008 at 06:15 PM
Yep, its time to take away his keys and suspend his drivers license. This is a no brainer.

Posted by: Old School Location: Old School on Jul 18, 2008 at 05:07 PM
Yeah, they should have mandatory driving tests every year after the age of 65!

Posted by: El Diablo Location: Hell on Jul 18, 2008 at 04:47 PM
People above the age of 65 should have to re-do driving tests every year or two to renew their licenses. Eyesight, hearing and reflexes are too important. And some people want a 70 year old to become president!!!

Posted by: me Location: waco on Jul 18, 2008 at 04:45 PM
Is there actually a question as to whether or not this man's license should be revoked? Do we want him causing more accidents and killing more innocent people. REVOKE THE LICENSE!

Posted by: ginny Location: cove on Jul 18, 2008 at 04:09 PM
well hello after all this i'd say "YEAH" revoke his lic, he sure as heck doesn't need to be behind the wheel of a vechicle. are you people nuts or what they shouldn't even be discussing it they should have taken it right away!!!!!!!!!!!!
