Four Die In Collapse Of Massive Crane At Texas Refinery Save Email Print

(July 18, 2008)—Four contract workers died Friday when a crane collapsed at a Houston chemical refinery.

Six other workers were hurt, a company vice president said.

The crane, capable of lifting 400 tons, toppled at Houston’s LyondellBasell refinery.

Vice President John Roecker says the casualties were in the area of the crane.

Fire department officials say three of the injured were treated and released at the scene.

Two workers were taken by helicopter to a hospital, while other was transported via ambulance.

The crane belongs to Deep South Crane & Rigging.

Roecker says the crane was being used to remove large drums from inside a coking unit.

The roof had been cut off to allow access.

The crane wasn't scheduled for use Friday, but Roecker said its engine was idling after it hit the ground.

About 1,500 contract workers are employed at the refinery.

Roecker says all plant personnel have been accounted for.

It is always sad to know that more have been killed in the construction world. It is hard to imagine how their family feels. I ,myself, and alot of my family all work in the construction busniess and know the dangers of the work. My husband is a crane operator and I fear for stories like this. He was suppost to go to that job, but he doesn't work for Deep South. My heart goes out to the families, and I hope that Deep South will help them. When ever there was a loss or bad family injury, we always put money in a hard hat, during the saftey meeting and made sure that he or she otherhalf/next of kin received the money for expenses. Consrtuction is like one big family, because you have to trust people everyday with your life. I am truely sorry and pray that nobody else will have to feel that kind of loss.
