(July 18, 2008)--Opponents of construction of the Bush presidential library complex at Southern Methodist University are trying to stop a church endorsement of the project.
Their appeal Friday came a day after the majority of delegates at the Methodist church's South Central Jurisdiction conference ratified last year's approval by a smaller council.
The jurisdiction owns the land, but a delegate has asked the judicial council to rule on whether it was proper for SMU to lease land below market value.
She also said the public policy institute that's part of the complex won't meet SMU and church rules because it won't be used for educational or religious purposes.
SMU officials say the library, museum and an associated think tank will be built on campus, although some Methodist ministers and SMU faculty members have voiced objections specifically to the think tank.
The president and first lady decided to build the complex at SMU after considering competing bids from the University of Dallas and Baylor University.
The University of Dallas has since withdrawn its bid.
