(August 7, 2008)—The Waco ISD school board will meet Thursday evening to discuss the future of one school that has been ranked Academically Unacceptable for the last five years in a row.

Waco ISD board members will decide whether its time to close the school for good and transfer those students to other middle schools in the district or keep it open and work to improve test scores.

The State Education Commissioner has already given approval to keep the school open under Waco control for one more year.

The meeting takes place 5:30pm at the WISD Conference Center near Fifth Street and Franklin Avenue in Waco.

"keep it open and work to improve test scores"?? Isn't that what they were supposed to be DOING for the last FIVE years?!?! Hopefully if they transfer these students, the teachers at that school will work to improve the scores. However, I must also mention the same issue that is being discussed with the "dress code, prison-made jumpsuit" topic... It starts with the PARENTS! In order for students to succeed, especially in an under-performing, low-income school, there MUST be parent/teacher communication! A friend of mine that taught in Waco schools (that has since moved to another district) told me that on parent/teacher conference days, she would have MAYBE 2 parents show up. That is a damn shame!

Something the media seemed to leave out (as reported to them by WISD Officials, I'm sure) is the fact that over the last few years the great improvement the kids have made in their scores at GL Wiley. This time they missed acceptable by one student's score. TEA knows this and that is why they are not recommending closure or TEA takeover this year. WISD should give Wiley another year as the TEA is willing.

The school should be kept open. Extra tutors for these students could be added. More parent participation is always desirable.

This isn't in the article-- I just saw it on WacoTrib.. but to the people who are rallying for the school to remain open.... why are they rallying now.. why not rally together when the 2nd Academically Unacceptable ranking happened??? I'm not surprised..

Is the building underperforming or is it the staff. Lets see, if I dont put gas in my car and it stops do I junk it for underperforming?

If it's been rated unacceptable five years in a row, they are about three years behind in closing it.

Now, if they transfer these students to the other middle schools, those schools are going to get even more crowded, and probably loads of more crime. I mean, I've been to Tennyson. There was a whole lot more crime there than I expected. No, i'm not trying to say that the school closing dhas a lot of bad kids, but there will be a whole lot more crime there if so.
