Doors Of Low-Performing Middle School Open Monday; Fate Uncertain Save Email Print

A | A | A

(August 25, 2008)—About 75 students showed up for the first day of class Monday at Waco’s low-performing G. L. Wiley Middle School.

That’s about half of the 156 who reported for the first day of school last year, and about a third of the school’s target enrollment of 210.

On Aug. 7, just weeks before the start of the school year, Waco School Board members voted 4-3 to close the school and to transfer students to other middle schools, but last week, Waco District Judge Jim Meyers issued an order that at least temporarily bars the district from shutting Wiley’s doors, pending a hearing Tuesday on a lawsuit that alleges the School Board violated the Texas Open Meetings Act.

Read Lawsuit Affidavit

Students who registered or have been placed at other schools didn’t have to return to Wiley and it appears many chose to stay at their new schools.

The school district said it would staff the school based on enrollment.

Meanwhile, school Board members meet Monday night to talk about the lawsuit and to consider again the proposal to close the school.

Texas Education Agency Commissioner Robert Scott had already given the school a one-year waiver to improve, but board members who supported closure cited the school’s declining enrollment and poor test performance.

Questions And Answers
(Source: WISD)

My child was planning to attend Wiley prior to board action on August 7, 2008. Can he/she return to the school?
Yes. G.L. Wiley Middle School will be open for school on August 25, 2008.

Will all of the teachers previously assigned to Wiley prior to board action on August 7, 2008 return to the school?
Not necessarily. The number of teachers returning to Wiley will be determined by the number of students who choose to return to the campus.

With the court’s ruling coming just four days prior to the start of school, what will the first day be like at G.L. Wiley?
Upon arriving at school, students should report to the auditorium where staff will be available to develop their class schedules. Administrators, teachers and support staff will work hard to make sure the needs of all students are addressed.

Will the school be open for the entire 2008-2009 school year?
The answer to this question is not yet known pending the outcome of the temporary injunction hearing and any action that might be taken by the Waco ISD Board of Trustees.

If Wiley does not remain open for the entire 2008-2009 school year, where will my child attend school?
Should Wiley not remain open for the entire school year, your child will return to the campus to which he/she was placed prior to the temporary restraining order.

My child was already reassigned to and looking forward to attending another Waco ISD middle school. May he/she stay there?
Yes.

Will all of the teachers previously assigned to Wiley prior to board action on August 7, 2008 return to that school?
Not necessarily. The number of teachers returning to Wiley will be determined by the number of students who choose to return to the campus.

Who will be the principal at Wiley?
Kermit Ward will return as principal at Wiley.

Will there be enough teachers, desks, computers, books, equipment and support staff at Wiley to start school?
Yes

What extra-curricular activities will be offered at Wiley?
Extra-curricular activities will be offered based on student interest.

If my child chooses to attend Wiley, will he/she be provided transportation?
Transportation will be provided for students who live two or more miles from their school or would be subject to hazardous traffic conditions if they walked to school.

To Interesting: My two were raised many years back and most likely better off than yourself! You are a moron. I tell it like I see it and the truth hurts, regardless what color skin you wear! Do you honestly think these parents and children really care or have not been given help? They have been given great people behind them and all they did was show animal behavior that exhibits zoo like behavior! Yes, go ahead and make excuses. It will not change the outcome! The ones that want to make something out of their self will and those that do not will make excuses. They will continue to live in a world of shame and blame everone except their own stupid ignorant self! Go and prove me wrong. Go into the neighborhoods and give it a try if your so gun-hoe! It would be nteresting how well you done. You have used the word, "cycle", I use the word excuse! You do not have to have a class for common sense!

Mac, comments like yours just keep us motivated!! I sure hope you don't have children where all of your "positive" energy can infect them!! Those "Wiley kids" can become great if someone GREAT is behind them. If u have the time to acknowledge the negative, offer a positive solution! You said you notice the parents are dumb and leeches. That's called a "cycle." If I was taught to fold a towel 3-way, I'm probably gonna teach my child to fold it 3-way, and so on and so forth...bad habits are transferred in the same manner so you can put the blame on some 12 year old children. And if the parents have never been taught any different, how do they know to do different? How bout suggest that the parents take some parenting classes to learn about their responsibilties as a parent, as well as be informed about the resources and opportunities available to them as humans and Americans. Mac, why don't you try that?

How will they justify keeping it open with only 75 students? If the other kids don't come back that a really low number. I don't think they'd be able to stay open more than just this year. I agree: find out what's wrong and fix it. These children need a quality education.

G.L. Wiley is a low performing school because the students are stupid, have no parential guidence and parents that could care less. This place is a baby sitter as for as the parents are concern! These children have behavior problems that is off the scale and most will become leaches on society, just like their parents! This type of behavior has been bred into these innocent children and the children will become a burden on society! A self condemn human has no chance in society today. A product of failed parential responsibility!

Please close Wiley and make it a college prep school or magnet school, and really prepare students for the real world, I hate when folks in East Waco act like Wiley isnt bad.
