Texas Newspaper Columnist Arrested After Son Left In Parking Lot Save Email Print

A | A | A

(August 27, 2008)--A Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist is accused of leaving his 11-year-old son in a restaurant parking lot after an argument, Watauga police say.

Authorities say Dave Lieber, 51, was arrested and turned himself in to the Tarrant County Jail on Tuesday.

He was released on $4,000 bond.

Watauga police Detective Tiffany Ward said Lieber was arrested on two probable cause warrants, one for child abandonment with intent to return and the other for child abandonment/endangering a child.

Both are felonies.

Police will refer the case to the Tarrant County district attorney, who will determine whether to file charges.

Ward says police responded to a Watauga fast-food restaurant on Aug. 13 after a customer called 911 to report an argument between a child and an adult, who had driven off while the boy was still in the parking lot.

She says that while police were interviewing witnesses, Lieber returned and was allowed to leave with his son.

Lieber wrote about the incident in an Aug. 15 column, saying he regretted his actions.

Star-Telegram Executive Editor Jim Witt says Lieber will be suspended from writing "The Watchdog" column, which investigates consumer complaints, while the case moves through the judicial system.

Sounds like part of the tough-love program to me, sometimes as parents we have to do things to get our children to understand that as the parent we mean business. Unless you are a parent you wouldn't even understand, kids are starting to be rebellious at a young age now.

Wow! What a jerk. He definitely won't be nominated for the Father of the Year award.

Wow. He is facing felony charges and a job suspension for leaving the kid in the parking lot for a few minutes and coming back to get him. Everyone take note: it is a felony to do that, but if you want to leave your kid in a hot car for several hours until the kid is dead, you will get away with just a slap on the wrist.
