WISD Will “Move Forward To Close” Low-Performing Middle School Save Email Print

A | A | A

(August 29, 2008)-- Students who started the school year Monday at Waco’s low-performing G. L. Wiley Middle School will return to class after the long weekend at other middle schools in the district after a judge’s ruling Friday morning.

Students and teachers at the school were told about the ruling late Friday morning.

The judge denied a request for a temporary injunction that would have kept the school open and dissolved the temporary restraining order that had forced Waco ISD officials to reopen the school Monday, after School Board members voted to close it.

The school’s supporters seeking the temporary injunction had argued that board members violated the Texas Open Meetings Act in the process of deciding the close the school.

But 170th District Court Judge Jim Meyers ruled that a subsequent vote by the board Monday corrected any mistakes in providing noticed of discussions about the closing.

“The Act does not prevent governmental bodies from curing prior Act violations,” Meyers wrote in a decision that was faxed to attorneys and the media at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

The ruling cleared the way for the district to close the school again.

“As a result of the court’s ruling…the district will move forward to close the school for the 2008-2009 school year,” the Waco ISD said in a four-paragraph press release.

Parents of students who returned to G. L. Wiley on Monday should enroll their children at the schools to which they were assigned before the temporary restraining order was issued last week.

Parents with questions or concerns may contact the district’s Office of Accountability and Instruction at (254) 755-9425 until 6 p.m. Friday or from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

“Receiving campuses are prepared to welcome former G. L. Wiley students and will support them in making a successful transition to their new campus,” the district said in the press release.

The hearing on the motion started Tuesday morning, a little more than 12 hours after Waco School Board members voted 4-3 for a second time to close the low-performing school.

Board members originally voted 4-3 on Aug. 7 to close the school, but Meyers issued a temporary restraining order last week that allowed about 100 students to report to Wiley for the first day of classes Monday.

After the Aug. 7 vote, Wiley students were transferred to other middle schools, and many evidently decided not to return to Wiley after Meyers temporarily barred the district from closing Wiley.

Texas Education Agency Commissioner Robert Scott had already given the school a one-year waiver to improve, but board members who supported closure cited the school’s declining enrollment and poor test performance.

Looks like the zoo is closing and the little baboons may be going to a school where they will be expected to know something.

This is stupid. You are adults, fighting and insulting each other, over the computer. Im a junior, I attend skyline center and yeah im proud of my school even if its considered a "low performing" school. You talk about the students being ignorant, idiots and animals..... thats pretty pathetic. I hate hypocrites. if i spelled something wrong please dont kill me

Posted by: Wisest one of All Location: Earth on Sep 1, 2008 at 12:23 PM
Well dumb arse. The teachers can only work with the material they have. When the students have parents like these how can they NOT fail. The parents are worse than the kids. They want their children in a dumbed down environment. You get the idea that the parents have had too many drinks of thunderbird, bong hits and too much crack. They should not be allowed to breed. They are only bringing stupid people into the world that you and I will have to pay taxes to support.

You know, impersonation is a form of flattery... but, anyway, I'm glad my words have had an impact.

Posted by: dumb arse Location: whaco tx on Aug 31, 2008 at 07:17 PM
I keep reading " substandard learning environment" that does that mean?? If Im not mistaken aren't the teachers responsible for that??

Posted by: jennifer Location: waco on Aug 31, 2008 at 01:06 PM
the blame for this school closing lies soley with the parents and students.. not the school board or administration of the school...if these so called problems would be addressed at home.. they wouldn't be such an issue in the class room...

That Guy, you are probably right about where Gibson lives. But, he wants the best for his kids. He cares about nobody elses. Proven fact!

Posted by: Randy Location: Bruceville on Aug 31, 2008 at 10:54 AM
The problem is all the kids in the school talk and write like "T" from Waco.

Posted by: Mom Location: Waco on Aug 31, 2008 at 08:53 AM
I'm so sick of people playing the race card. Have you not looked around lately in Waco? White people are becoming the minority. White's get way less than others. Please stop with the race thing. I feel sorry for the kids (no matter what color) that have to go through this. This is going to affect them... starting school with all of this mess then having to start at another school. I hope they can overcome this and it doesn't affect their learning.

Posted by: That Guy Location: Waco on Aug 30, 2008 at 04:01 PM
Doesnt Lester Gibson and his wife, the Waco School Board member, live in Lacy Lakeview? Did his kids go to Wiley??

Posted by: Wisest one of All Location: Earth on Aug 30, 2008 at 12:38 PM
Wrong T from Waco. They have already had years(5) to fix this problem. The problem is the students. Proven fact!

Posted by: Texas Location: Texas on Aug 30, 2008 at 07:28 AM
T, your grammar/spelling isnt helping to make your case. Did you go to G.L. Wiley? Parents not making their children accountable for themselves is a huge part of the problem. Low performing schools arent soley because of the teachers. You have to ahve students willing to learn and parents willing to make their kids go to school and attempt to better themselves through education. Parents in this district should turn the spotlight on themselves and their children to find answers to the problem with G.L. Wiley.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: killeen on Aug 30, 2008 at 02:54 AM
what a wast of money going back into court, the school has a record of being low performing why wasn't something done prior. Stop fighting the problem and fix it, move the students and let them get the education they need not meaning they didn't have good teachers prior. So lets go foward and let the students get educated, and they lack manors in the classroom deal with it, they will learn who is in charged. Leave it alone and move on.

It's about time! Those parents who are whining need to do what is bast for their children. They are being terrible examples to their kids. Put your kid's education in front of your "right to be mad" to be mad and do the right thing. Stop wasting time and money that the district needs to invest in schools that work!

Posted by: kevin Location: killeen on Aug 29, 2008 at 09:24 PM
way to go school board finally the kids will get a better education at a good school. Im happy to see this.

Posted by: Remember Alamo Location: TX on Aug 29, 2008 at 08:29 PM
Send the parents to G.L. Wiley and transfer the children! Who knows, maybe one of them will get an education!

Posted by: Sam Bam Location: TX on Aug 29, 2008 at 08:19 PM
To T location; The problem is the students are stupid and are being raised by morons! You appear to be ignorant as well, soo is so, wroung is wrong, let me guess, you went to G.L. Wiley. Have you read your comment? You have got to be a parent of one of this future idiots! Only G.L. Wiley gradutes speak this way. No wonder the school was shut down!

Teacher, zoo-keeper... not much difference, these days.

Posted by: The Patriot Location: Texas on Aug 29, 2008 at 06:19 PM
Mac, well said! After I read the entire ridiculous lawsuit that basically said that these minority black students should stay in their racially black identifiable "failing" school, I said, if that's what these moron parents want, then so be it. Jessie in Waco.. Amen! Ignorance breeds ignorance.

I am amazed at how incredibly stupid people can be.

The school board and etc expressed through their acts of unconcern, just what they thought about G L Wiley. During the few day that i remained opened after their unfair closing, they didn' think enough of the student there to assing a crossing guard to insure childrens safety. Never did I witness the school warning lights working during this period. Thanks for more taxation without representation.

To: T in Waco In reading (or attempting to read) your post, I have concluded that you are a COMPLETE IDIOT. You cannot spell nor construct a complete sentence. You should be in a cage with all of the other uneducated monkeys. On second thought, you probably already have been----we call it JAIL.

Posted by: Sam Bam Location: TX on Aug 29, 2008 at 04:30 PM
To Another Minority: If your black you are no longer a minority in Texas. If you are white you are no longer a majority! Now, lets see how well you can do! Who are you going to blame now! Call it like I see it and so be it! Come jump on this racist, just because I am white! I don't feel for you, I dispise you for hiding behind the color of your skin!

Posted by: Lewis Location: Temple on Aug 29, 2008 at 04:23 PM
The comment about the zoo and monkeys was just as low as you could go. And just to think someone's name is "Me" because if you wrote the coment; I know you would want to world to know who you are.

Posted by: Don Location: rdctex@hotmail.com on Aug 29, 2008 at 04:11 PM
To Another Minority, Amen. To Renee, you need to ask your friends about this one. There is no way I would even think that and there is no way I would say what it means in a public forum. Very, Very low blow.

P.S. C/Bellmead, how is calling them baby goats (kids) any different than calling them monkeys?

Posted by: Me Location: Central Texas on Aug 29, 2008 at 03:41 PM
It's their behavior that I was commenting on, not their appearance. Apparently you think they look like monkeys???

Posted by: T Location: Waco on Aug 29, 2008 at 03:05 PM
It time for recall vote.It time too kick out the sorry school board members that voted too close the school. This is the wroung way of doing thing. The right way is too fix the problem.why are kid doing so poor in school is the problem. The problem is soo screw up that Judge just wash his from the problem in stead of fixing problem.

Posted by: Parent Location: North Waco on Aug 29, 2008 at 03:01 PM
To me: your kids might be monkeys or will some day be monkeys but those kids that go to that school are children and you are an IDIOT! Why dont you go live in a zoo, are you a zoo keeper? You are always making comments about the zoo and monkeys, do something better with your time!

Posted by: Ralph Location: Waco on Aug 29, 2008 at 02:33 PM
Way to go Mr Gibson and mr Austin your racist attitude did not work this time. Why don't you two do something worth while and move New Orleans where your veiws are common among those who draw government checks for doing nothing.

Posted by: Another Minority Location: WACO on Aug 29, 2008 at 02:23 PM
To Me. That was a very low blow. You are obviously a very prejudical person. I hope you don't teach your kids to be like you. We don't need any more offprings turning out the way you did. I feel sorry for you for going thru life with that attitude.

Posted by: RENEE Location: WACO on Aug 29, 2008 at 01:57 PM
I DON'T GET THE MONKEY JOKE, COULD YOU ELABORATE MORE ?

Posted by: C Location: Bellmead on Aug 29, 2008 at 01:33 PM
I guess my other comment was too true to be published about Me's comment i see they can say what they want to in a derougative manner, whatever, but close the school and get this mess over with so the kids not monkeys can get on with their education.

Posted by: Me Location: Central Texas on Aug 29, 2008 at 12:35 PM
Bill, Lester's constituents are as ridiculous as he is (as evident by the videos)... he'll be reelected easily.

Posted by: lr Location: Waco on Aug 29, 2008 at 12:08 PM
Amen to Bill, better yet re-elect his wife to the school board. Do you really think that his children go to Wiley? He should spend more time and money getting drug treatment for his son that recently was arrested on drug charges. Such a good example of a parent.

Posted by: Mac Location: TX on Aug 29, 2008 at 11:51 AM
Guess Lester Gibson found out he was not in charge! Told You So! The judge most likely took a good look at the morons for parents and how their children were being raised. Pouring good money down the drain! Oh yea, what happen to all the money the so call supporters donated to Lester Gibson the tipster? Perhaps, he tip himself!

Posted by: Jessie Location: Waco on Aug 29, 2008 at 11:46 AM
Im sure the judge was a racist also... What a waste of time and money... These are amazing times we live in.. Am I really guilty for being white and voting for Mcain? Does this make me a racist? Although most people want to blame Bush for everything like one man controls everything... haha I am making more money this year than I did last year and it's not because of Bush or Mcain or Obama. It is because I work 2 jobs and bust my butt. I try my best to raise my kids the way my dad did me. With a strong hand and a kind heart. Don't lie, Don't cheat, and Don't steal. If you don't have the money for it, work for it and get it. Don't set back and wait for someone to give it to you. I don't have nor want anything that I have earned off the sweat of my brow.. Somewhere along the line we have forgotted to teach these God given rules to our children. When we take the ten commandments out of school we take accountabilty for ones actions out. Therefore we raise a bunch of animals...

Posted by: Bill Location: Waco on Aug 29, 2008 at 11:12 AM
Lester Gibson wasted the supports money, the court's time and disrupted the education of the students. Let's re-elect him agian.

Posted by: Lisa Location: Temple on Aug 29, 2008 at 11:06 AM
Good job parents. Now your underachieving kids can go to the school they were assigned to before school started. Now they are even farther behind all the other kids. Some parents shouldnt have had kids

Posted by: Parent Location: Waco on Aug 29, 2008 at 11:04 AM
To Me: you have got to be stupid! Maybe you child is or will be a monkey but the kids that go to that school are children not monkeys!

Posted by: Sue Location: Central Texas on Aug 29, 2008 at 10:55 AM
What dif where they go they arn't going to do any better any were else only thing accomplished is they will drag down a good preforming school. Should have just let them stay at Wiley it already had a bad name.

Kids are more resourceful than you think! The students will not be harmed by a little confusion to start off the year...kids adapt quickly! The students will be better off at other schools...GL Wiley just couldn't get it right enough to stay open.....thank you, Judge! Good luck, students of GL Wiley in the coming year! This is a blessing in disguise, though it may not be apparent at this time.

Posted by: Me Location: Central Texas on Aug 29, 2008 at 10:40 AM
All humor aside, now that the decision is made, I feel sorry for the schools that will have to face the challenges of integrating these behaviorally-challenged children into their already structured classrooms.

@me from central texas - you've got the intelligence of a monkey - at least have the &%$*# to give your name when u make brazen racist comments like that...

Posted by: Concerned Location: In the area on Aug 29, 2008 at 09:16 AM
The students at GL Wiley deserve the same education that is offered in other schools. The problem is not the ethnicity of the school, but the lack of campus supervision, the lack of teaching experience in the hallways and the low expectations that the school has set for the campus. I don't believe that Kermit Ward is capable of turning that school around. What they need are new teachers and new leadership that allow them to do WHATEVER needs to be done to improve BEHAVIOR, GRADES, SCORES, ETC. Discipline in that school is almost non existent and the student behavior present there would be unacceptable in any social structure.Leave it open, fix it and then redraw the lines. There are other ways to deal with this.

In all seriousness if less than 100 students returned to the school. I assume that a descent education is relevant to at least most of the families involved. So I guess it is the remaining 100 that are raising hell over keeping this school open? I want to address this question to any of those 100 who returned to Wiley. Why do you want your children to remain in a substandard learning environment?

To even ask how stupid it was for the judge to open the school on the first day, how stupid was it for the board to think they would get over and make some quick, inappropriate judgement on the school knowing full well they hadn't met requirements to do so? Don't lean on the law when it works in your favor. If the school needed to be closed, they should have taken the proper steps to make that happen. When you're dirty, it shows!! So don't get mad at the people for fighting back. Wouldn't you if someone was trying to come in and just move you out of your house w/a 2 week notice w/o proper explanation? Or are YOU the type to lay down, roll over, and just take it? Yea, that sounds more like you...so I can understand your thoughts...Well we're not!! What's that old song? "WE'RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT!! NO, WE AIN'T GONNA TAKE IT!! WE'RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE!!" Ponder on THAT for a minute, SSSSSSSSS!!!

Posted by: C Location: Bellmead on Aug 29, 2008 at 04:19 AM
Me you must be racist, in this day and time it's sad that you would make a comment about kids being referred to as monkeys, what a shame you should probably be at a zoo for stupid non-humans, maybe a horses a@#

Posted by: Me Location: Central Texas on Aug 29, 2008 at 12:55 AM
i am a bigot tried and true! I try to make you believe i stand for the red, white and blue! The truth is i dont and my agenda is clear! I must spread hate, intolerance and fear! Our country cant come together because things would surely improve and morally bankrupt idiots like me would have nothing to do! So listen to my words and remember when you vote and dont vote for that guy you know the one that offers hope!

Posted by: Joe Location: Waco on Aug 28, 2008 at 11:30 PM
keep it open so they keep the problems in one school, maybe Mr. Austin can join them.

Posted by: Me Location: Central Texas on Aug 28, 2008 at 08:34 PM
That doesn't give the zoo much time to make space for the little monkeys.

Posted by: S Location: Robinson on Aug 28, 2008 at 07:21 PM
How stupid is this? In my opinion, the judge made a poor decision to reopen Wiley. Now the students will probably have to transfer to other schools in few days. This is just going to disrupt classes that are already in session at other schools not to mention the mental anguish of the students having to be transferred.
