(August 29, 2008)—University of Mary Hardin-Baylor President Dr. Jerry Bawcom, who guided the university in Belton through a more than 15-year period of academic, financial and athletic growth, said Friday he will step down at the end of the school year.
The Executive Committee of the UMHB Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution naming Bawcom chancellor, in which role he will continue to serve the university through public relations and fundraising, UMHB said.
Bawcom, 64, is the 18th president of the university.
He assumed the post in Feb. 1991.
During his tenure, enrollment increased from fewer than 1,700 students to more than 2,700 this fall, SAT scores of incoming freshmen increased, the university’s budget increased from $11.4 million to $55 million, the campus grew physically, and the school’s athletic program was expanded to include football and women’s soccer.
“Jerry G. Bawcom has had an extraordinary impact on this university and this community,” said Andy Davis, chair of the UMHB Board of Trustees.
“The growth and reputation of this university under his leadership has provided a tremendous foundation for the future,” he said.
Bawcom spoke to faculty and staff Friday, saying, “No university president could be as blessed or as privileged as I have been to serve you and UMHB. I see only more success in the future, and I firmly believe that this is an exciting time to be at Mary Hardin-Baylor.”
