Accused KFC Killer Goes On Trial Monday In Central Texas Save Email Print

A | A | A

(September 6, 2008)—Jury selection begins Monday in Bryan for the capital murder trial of the second defendant in one of the state’s most notorious mass murder cases.

Darnell Hartsfield, 47, faces trial on five counts of capital murder in connection with the 1983 slayings of five people at a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Kilgore.

The trial was moved to Brazos County because of heavy pretrial publicity.

Hartsfield's cousin and co-defendant, Romeo Pinkerton, agreed to a plea deal midway through his capital murder trial near Texarkana, avoiding a possible death sentence by accepting five life prison terms.
Hartsfield evidently is not engaged in any similar negotiations.

David Maxwell, Mary Tyler, Opie Ann Hughes, Joey Johnson and Monte Landers were killed in the 1983 restaurant holdup.

All of the victims except for Landers worked at the restaurant about 25 miles east of Tyler.

Landers was a friend of Maxwell and Johnson and was visiting them as the restaurant was closing for the night.

SHAME ON THE JUDICIAL OFFICIALS who are involved with this crime ,and i mean prosecutors, lawyers, and judges ,i guess they decided to give these two pieces of pig sh*@ 25 years to sit around and eat fried chicken before putting justice to work like it should, i cannot believe that such a horrific crime that was committed has not been completed by putting these two worthless spaces of air to death and taken out of society, when i read stories like this i can only imagine the suffering that the victim's families go through day after day by not putting an end to this, something like this is totally unacceptable and all judicial personnel should have to be held accountable for allowing this length of time to pass before not putting this one in the books as case closed!!!!

I agree fully with Wendy and J.C. This man is the reason we have the death penalty in Texas. On a lighter note, is it just me or do you think the crime is slightly ironic? A black man kills five what people that work at a Kentucky FRIED CHICKEN? This absolutely has to be a hate crime.

I was living in Tyler at the time, and remember this horrible crime. If ever anyone deserved the death penalty, the individuals that committed this one have earned a value added death sentence. As is often the case, man made justice falls short. Lawyers, and prosecutors in particular, are more interested in "convictions" leading to career advancement. Justice is secondary---a mere philosophical abstraction. I wonder if the victims who lie rotting in their graves would be happy with "lawyer justice."

nail him and his partners up for their crlme. Now the state has to cloth feed and house one crook foe years when the people that were KILLED were denied any more time to live. Our laws protect the guilty, not the victims.

1983 ???????? 1983 ??? Who has been asleep at the wheel? OR are there facts not in the story?

This was a black on white crime. If it was the other way around, I bet you all would have written that in the headlines.

Well 5 life sentence terms???? Capitol Murder?? Well to my knowledge capitol murder does constitute the Death Penalty!!! Why house the killers and feed them and cloth them for the rest of their lives??? What about the 5 people that lost their lives?? so what makes these 2 killers any different from the 5 poor people who died.. STICK THE NEEDLE IN THEM AND DO AWAY WITH THE SCUM... Another way Our Tax dollars and attornies at work...
